We have chosen to define server racks (without doors or side panels) and server cabinets (with doors and side panels) as rackmount racking made for deep hot running servers. These type servers normally require rackrails that have square holes for 6mm rack screws / cagenuts rather than 10/32 or 12/24 tapped holes.
On the other hand, a computer rack (without doors or side panels) and computer cabinet (with doors and side panels) are most often used for rackmount hardware that is not as deep and does not have the high run temperature. They usually have 10/32 tapped rackrails versus the square hole rackrails. If there is any confusion as to what is the best type of computer cabinet or computer rack to get, please call 800-458-6255 and one of our Account Managers will happy to help.
Other words, that many people use when looking for the above type racking, are computer enclosures, rackmount enclosures, data cabinets, network cabinets, network racks, electronic cabinets and rack cabinets. Whatever the case, we will get you the correct rackmount cabinets for your application.
ISC Glossary For Server Racks, Server Cabinets, Computer Racks, 4-Post Server Rack
Server Rack, Server Racks: Server Rack: A frame that can have doors and side panels added with square hole rackrails for deep hot running hardware
4-Post Rack: There are many versions and no standard. A typical 4-post system consists of four vertical rackrails that have the ability to change depth. The foot print, for many of them, changes versus a computer cabinet or cabinet frame. Some adjust from 26"- 42" deep. Most of these type racks do not have side panels or doors and are a hybrid rack designed to cost less than a server rack cabinet.
Server Cabinet, Server Cabinets: A rackmount frame with perforated doors, side panels, top panels (enclosed)
Computer Rack, Computer Racks: A computer rack frame with tapped hole rack rails, normally 10/32, for shallow rackmount hardware
Computer Cabinet, Computer Cabinets: A computer cabinet frame with doors, side panels, top panels (enclosed)
"U", RU, Rack Unit, Rack Space, Space, Unit: These are words and abbreviations used to indicate the usable height of a server rack, computer rack or any rackmount frame. The most common is "U" but all of the terms refer to the height of the rackmount item being mounted which is 1.75". Thus 1U = 1.75", 2U = 3.5".
